The fast recalls both the three days Jonah spent in the fish and the Ninevites' repentance after his message. During the Nineveh Fast, believers abstain from food and drink, and may refrain from meat, fish, and dairy Products.

മൂന്ന് നോമ്പ് നടത്തുന്നതിനുണ്ടായ ആദ്യകാരണം, നിനവേക്കാരുടെ 3 ദിവസത്തെ ഉപവാസമാണ് . യോനാപ്രവാചകന്റെ പ്രസംഗം കേട്ട് നിനവേക്കാർ 3 ദിവസം ചാക്കുടുത്തു ഉപവസിച്ചു. അവരുടെ മാനസാന്തരം ദർശിച്ച ദൈവം തന്റെ ഉഗ്ര കോപത്തിൽ നിന്നും അവരെ രക്ഷിച്ചു . ഇതേ തുടർന്ന് ദേശത്തു മഹാബാധയുണ്ടാകുമ്പോൾ, എല്ലാവരും ഉപവസിച്ചു പ്രാത്ഥിച്ചു,മൂന്ന് നോമ്പ് അനുഷ്ഠിച്ചിരുന്നു.പേർഷ്യ രാജ്യത്തു ഇപ്രകാരം ബാധയുണ്ടായപ്പോൾ ബീത്തു സ്ലോഗിലെ മെത്രാപ്പോലീത്തയായ മാർ സൗറിശോ തിരുമേനി ജനത്തെ കൂട്ടി വരുത്തി ഉപവാസം പ്രസിദ്ധമാക്കി. "നിങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നും ഈ ബാധ ഒഴിയുന്നതിനു മൂന്ന് നോമ്പ് അനുഷ്ഠിക്കുക" എന്ന മാലാഖയുടെ ശബ്ദം കേട്ടിട്ടാണ് അദ്ദേഹം മൂന്നു നോമ്പ് അനുഷ്ഠിക്കാൻ ജനത്തോടു ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടത്. മൂന്നു നോമ്പ് അനുഷ്ഠിച്ചതു ഒരു തിങ്കളാഴ്ചയായിരുന്നു. വെള്ളിയാഴ്ചയോടുകൂടി എല്ലാവരും രോഗ ബാധയിൽ നിന്നും വിമുക്തരായി ശുദ്ധീകരിക്കപ്പെട്ടു.അന്ന് മുതൽ ഇന്നുവരെ ഈ ദേശങ്ങളിൽ പാരമ്പര്യമായി ശ്രദ്ധാപൂർവ്വം മൂന്ന് നോമ്പ് അഥവാ ബാഊത്താ അനുഷ്ഠിക്കുന്നു.
