Notes
Melody of BRIK HANNANA From THE CHURCH OF THE EAST, INDIA.
The melody of this famous Christological hymn is unique due to its rhythmic structure. The verses consist of four-syllable phrases, Bri-ha-nna-na, daw-thai-bu-se. The melodis interpretation, however, follows a three-beats structure in a 6/8 rhythm. Such a rhythmic approach is very rare in the traditional Syriac chant repertory. It is possible that this melody is of Kerala origin from relatively recent past.
We are grateful to Ann Lia Wilson and Wilson Muriyadan for sharing this video and granting perission to post it on our channel. The video is a welcome addition to the section on Music Ecumenism among Syriac churches in India.
