This is the first part of a long interview with a great priest and a faithful son of the Syro Malabar Church. Fr. Pathikulangara dedicated his life to the study of the Syro Malabar liturgy. Growing up in the Syriac era and living through the transition of the East-Syriac liturgy into Malayalam and then into several other languages, Fr. Pathikulanagara built bridges between the past and the present. The results of his studies are available in a large number of publications that are valuable resources for seminarians, clergy, scholars, anyone who is curious about the Indian version of the East-Syriac liturgy. Fr. Pathikulanagara achieved all these despite his ill health for many years; he captivated his students through his calm and serene demeanor. and instilled in their minds a love for the Syro Malabar liturgy. Currently, Fr. Pathikulangara is enjoying a retired life at the Christ the King Monastery at Karukutty in the Ernakulam district of Kerala, India. Thalikasthanam Thoma Mathai (Jarly), who is equally zealous about preserving the Syriac heritage of the Syro Malabar Church, conducted this interview at Karukutty, on 30 October 2020. We are also grateful to Joseph Kurian Palackal for recording the interview. We are sure this video will be a precious treasure for Fr. Pathikulangara's students and admirers (that includes me) and those who make use of his writings every day around the world.
